What you’re in for

Corfe Castle to Bridport along the World Heritage coast: Swanage, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, Weymouth at halfway, then Portland, the Chesil bank and Bridport, 100km with about 2,300m of climb on the organiser's figures. The 59km first half has 1,700m of that, which makes the 42km second half the gentle one; there is also a 76km, 25km and 34km quarters, a Weymouth trail marathon and a Bridport 10K. Mid-May, through Saturday night for the continuous distance. An Ultra Challenge event, which means walkers, joggers and runners on the same course, signed with pink arrows and glow sticks after dark, with a covered rest stop every twelve kilometres or so — food, drink, medics, toilets — and a bigger one every twenty-five. Runners can enter with a target time; most of the field will be walking.

Terrain and trail

The Purbeck coast path is the hard part: steep grassy climbs and drops between the coves from Swanage to Lulworth, steps at Durdle Door, and an exposed stretch on to Weymouth. After that it eases — esplanade, then the coast path behind Chesil. Firm in May, slippery on the chalk after rain. Signed. A trail shoe with grip.
