No reviews of the Cotswold Way Challenge, and nothing on what people wore. Both are things no organiser publishes and every runner wants before they enter — how it actually went, and what was on your feet.

What you’re in for

A 100km loop from Cirencester out to the Cotswold escarpment and back — Painswick at the quarter, Wotton-under-Edge at halfway — with about 2,250m of climb on the organiser's figures, and the loop cut into a 76km, a 53km first half, a 47km second half, quarters of 24km and 30km, a ten-mile loop at Wotton and a 10K at Cirencester. The first half has most of the hills: 1,600m of the total. Mid-June, through Saturday night for the continuous 100km, or split over two days in daylight. An Ultra Challenge event, which means walkers, joggers and runners on the same course, signed with pink arrows and glow sticks after dark, with a covered rest stop every twelve kilometres or so — food, drink, medics, toilets — and a bigger one every twenty-five. Runners can enter with a target time; most of the field will be walking.

Terrain and trail

The Cotswold Way and the footpaths either side of it: field path, beech-wood escarpment, stone-village lane and farm track, with the steep bits where the route climbs onto the edge and drops off it again. Firm in June, muddy in the woods after rain. Signed. A trail shoe.
