What you’re in for
Five routes from Sudeley Castle at Winchcombe in May, on the Cotswold Way and the Winchcombe Way across the northern Cotswolds: bridleways, beech woods, honey-stone villages and the open escarpment with views over the Severn vale. The Short is 7.1km with 45m of climb, the Middle 10.9km and 243m, the Half 22.8km and 481m, the Marathon 42.3km and 992m, the 50k Ultra 50.5km and 1,268m. Ultra at nine, Marathon at half past, Half at ten, Middle and Short at half past ten.
Terrain and trail
Hard-packed, well-established trails with some steeper hills, in the organiser's rating. The escarpment climbs are the steep ones — power-hiking territory — and the descents open into long flowing sections. Firm in May. A trail shoe for the Half upwards. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.
