What you’re in for
A trail marathon that turns into a road one. From Stanmer Park on the Sunday of Brighton Marathon weekend, 42km off-road over the South Downs — woodland, chalk track, farmland and the climb of Ditchling Beacon, the highest point in East Sussex — before the route merges with the Brighton Marathon for the final push along the seafront to the finish at Hove Lawns. It is 42.6km with 761m of climb, all of it in the first three quarters. Start at 09:30. Over-18s only, and it has its own entry rather than the usual Maverick multi-buy.
Terrain and trail
Chalk downland, woodland and farm track for the trail section, hard-packed and not technical but hilly, then tarmac from the point you join the road marathon. Two races' worth of shoe choice: a road shoe with tread will do the whole thing if it is dry. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.
