What you’re in for
Maverick's hardest day for the height gained: from Caffyns Farm above Lynton in May, straight onto the South West Coast Path along the cliffs of the Bristol Channel, through the Valley of Rocks with its feral goats, then inland through the wooded combes, rivers and waterfalls of Exmoor and back. Five distances, all of them steep. The Short is 5.4km with 188m of climb, the Middle 14.6km and 679m, the Half 20.4km and 981m, the Marathon 42.1km and 1,998m, the 50k Ultra 55.5km and 2,513m. Ultra cut-offs give ten hours: Lynmouth at 7km by 09:15, Glenthorne at 17km by 11:00, Porlock Beach at 27.5km by 12:50, County Gate at 39km by 15:20, Watersmeet at 47km by 16:35. The Marathon gets nine and a half. Camping on site at the farm.
Terrain and trail
Coast path that climbs and drops relentlessly — the cliffs here are the highest in England — then steep, rooty woodland trail in the combes and open moor between. Technical descents, long climbs, exposed to the Atlantic on the coast. Five outposts on the Ultra. Full kit on the Ultra and Marathon. A trail shoe with grip and the humility to walk the climbs. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.
