What you’re in for

The centre of the Maverick calendar, from Bakewell Showground in June: five routes out into the Peak District over gritstone edges, high moor and the river valleys between, taking in Bamford, Hathersage, Curbar, Froggatt and Stanage on the longer distances, with old railway lines and a stretch of the Pennine path linking them. The Short is 6.4km with 98m of climb, the Middle 10.2km and 244m, the Half 28.2km and 536m — long for a half — the Marathon 40.6km and 845m, the 50k Ultra 54.7km and 1,051m. Ultra and Marathon start at eight, the Half at nine, Middle and Short at ten. Dogs on the Middle and Short only.

Terrain and trail

Rocky climbs and descents on the edges, open moor, forest track and valley path, with the stone steps up onto the gritstone the bit the organiser warns you about. The Half is the surprise: 28km with a proper edge crossing in it. Firm in June for the most part; the moor tops hold water. A trail shoe with grip for anything above the Middle. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.

You connect a whole run of limestone dales in one loop, swapping the gritstone moors of the Dark Peak for clear rivers, green valleys and dry-stone-walled plateau.

A genuine city-to-gritstone-and-back run. You leave a suburban car park, touch the Stanage trig and Stanedge Pole, and come home through the Porter Valley without ever getting in a car.

Win Hill's summit is a bare gritstone knuckle with one of the widest views in the Dark Peak - Kinder, the Derwent moors and the whole Hope Valley at once - for a climb you can fit into a morning.

Edale Skyline

You spend almost the whole loop on the skyline itself, linking gritstone edges and summits with the Edale valley dropping away below you the entire way round.
