What you’re in for

The Weekend Saunter format: five, ten or a half at your own pace on a weekend morning, with places on the day. It is the gentlest thing on the Grim calendar, meant for a first race or a long-run-with-company rather than a time. The course is the Calder & Hebble Navigation towpath from Brookfoot footbridge on the edge of Brighouse, an out-and-back turning at a marshal. The Calder & Hebble is a broad, quiet canal running alongside the river through Calderdale, and this stretch heads out past Cromwell Bottom nature reserve towards Elland.

Terrain and trail

Mostly surfaced towpath, flatter than the Leeds & Liverpool because there are fewer locks on this stretch, with short sections of rougher path where the canal and river run close together. Good, quick ground. Wet under the bridges after rain. The events are cup-less, so bring your own cup or bottle for the water at the finish. Over-ear headphones are not allowed, and there may be an unmarshalled road crossing.
