What you’re in for

A wide loop of the spa town on country paths, and the race the organiser rates as the kindest introduction to ultra distance on their calendar. It circles Harrogate at a radius of three to four miles, threading the wooded Nidd Gorge on the way. The 20 Mile follows the waymarked Harrogate Ringway all the way round; the 34 Mile follows the Ringway until it meets the Knaresborough Round, takes that in, and rejoins. The 13 Mile is 23.0km with 337m of climb, the 20 Mile 32.5km and 624m, the 34 Mile 55.1km and 752m. Under 800m of climb over 55km is as flat as a Yorkshire ultra gets, which is the point. Early February, so expect cold and mud rather than exposure.

Terrain and trail

Field paths, bridleways, woodland tracks through Nidd Gorge and short lane sections, with the odd stretch of surfaced path at the Harrogate end. Nothing technical, but February farmland is heavy going and the gorge paths are slick under leaf litter. Taped and flagged the week before as confirmation of the route, and the Ringway and Knaresborough Round both carry their own waymarks, which makes this one of the easier Punk Panther courses to follow. Carry the route description and GPX all the same. Ultra runners wear a tracker; the 34 Mile finishes at dusk.
