The Atom Panopticon from Wycoller Country Park

The route

Start in Wycoller Country Park car park and pick up the lane heading east towards the moor. The climb is steady rather than sharp, gaining around 160m across 6.3km as farmland gives way to open moor edge above Wycoller. The Atom sits at the high point of the loop, so you earn the view on the way up and run most of the way back down.

The Atom

The Atom is one of the Panopticons, a set of contemporary landmarks built across Pennine Lancashire in the 2000s. It is a curved shell you can step inside, and from the doorway the land opens out. Pendle Hill fills the skyline to the south west, Boulsworth Hill sits heavy to the east. On a clear morning it is worth stopping here before you turn for home.

Why it works

This is a short loop that packs in a lot: quiet lanes, a proper moor-edge feel, and a landmark worth the climb. The ground is mostly good track and field path, though the moor sections hold water after rain and the grass turns slick on the descent. It suits an easy hour, a recovery run, or a first outing on the Trawden moors before you take on something bigger like Boulsworth itself. Navigation is straightforward in clear weather, since the Atom is visible for much of the second half, but the moor edge feels remote enough that you will want the map if cloud drops. Wycoller Country Park sits just below, so it pairs well with a longer add-on if you want to extend the day. Come back after heavy rain and the whole loop turns properly Pennine underfoot, which is either the appeal or the warning depending on your mood. Firm underfoot in a dry spell, it is genuinely quick, so it also works as a sharp evening blast when you want the hills but not the hours.
