Great route with very mixed terrain

Being a Skipton local, I knew most of the route. It starts with a decent, long runnable climb up to Pinhaw Beacon, where it joins the Pennine Way all the way to Gargrave. Onto the canal for a few miles tests the legs before you wind your way back through Embsay and Skipton Woods and onto the canal for a sprint finish. Punk Panther marshals are always great and the races are well organised. Highly recommended. Would do it again

What you’re in for

Heads west from Skipton to meet the Pennine Way near Pinhaw Beacon and continues to Thornton-in-Craven. Longer courses carry on through Gargrave to Malham Tarn, over to Arncliffe, then join the Dales Way at Starbotton and follow it through Kettlewell, Grassington and Burnsall to Barden Bridge before returning to Skipton via Embsay.

Terrain and trail

Everything except the 50 mile is taped and flagged in yellow — but the organiser is blunt that the tape is confirmation only, not navigation: it gets stolen and it gets moved. There are no directional marshals. Carry the route description in print, and have the GPX on a watch or phone. The Dales Way and Pennine Way sections are unmarked on every distance. Field paths, canal towpath and open moor, with road crossings. Gates matter here — leave one open and you are disqualified, and the organiser means it.

Water, coke, energy bars and crisps at every checkpoint, plus vegan and gluten-free snacks. Checkpoints at Clogger Lane near Elsack, Gargrave, Kettlewell and the Red Lion at Burnsall. Clogger Lane is on all four distances, Gargrave on the 20, 34 and 50, Burnsall on the 34 and 50, and Kettlewell on the 50 only. The organiser's page numbers these CP1, CP2, CP4 and CP5, with no CP3 listed.

Cut-offs

No overall time limit is published, and no cut-off rule is stated on the race page. The checkpoint closing times are what to run to. Course closes 23:30. Checkpoints close: Clogger Lane 10:00, Gargrave 12:00, Burnsall 19:00, Kettlewell 17:00.
