What you’re in for

The Rock Up n' Run format: register from six, pay on the night if online entries have closed, run, then collect a jumble medal and a drink. It is a club night with a bib rather than a race weekend, and it is pitched that way. A summer evening 5k or 10k on the towpath from Craven Leisure Centre, with hot food after. The course is the Leeds & Liverpool Canal towpath from Craven Leisure Centre on Gargrave Road, out of Skipton and west towards the Dales on an out-and-back, turning at a marshal. Skipton station is a short walk from the leisure centre.

Terrain and trail

Surfaced towpath through the town giving way to a rougher, grassier path once you are out into open country towards Gargrave, so the further you go the more it feels like a trail. Flat, with the odd swing bridge and lock ramp. The organiser suggests road shoes for the winter event and they are right for the shorter distances; the marathon and ultra spend enough time on the rough stretch to justify a light trail shoe. The events are cup-less, so bring your own cup or bottle for the water at the finish. Over-ear headphones are not allowed, and there may be an unmarshalled road crossing.

Skipton to Saltaire Along the CanalHARD
Skipton to Saltaire Along the Canal
25.6km · 0m climb · Point to point · 1.1km away
Zero metres of climbing over 25.6km means this is pure running, not hill work - a good route for working on pace and distance without terrain getting in the way.

EXPERT
Skipton Round
96.5km · 2,428m climb · Loop · 1.7km away
You circle Skipton on a huge loop through the quieter country of Craven, linking moor edge, riverside and old field paths that most runners pass through but never string together.
Embsay Crag from SkiptonMODERATE
Embsay Crag from Skipton
11.6km · 304m climb · Loop · 1.8km away
Embsay Crag is one of those gritstone edges that looks ordinary on the map and delivers something much better in person - proper moor underfoot and a long view across the Dales skyline.

Skipton Moor and Farnhill PinnacleHARD
Skipton Moor and Farnhill Pinnacle
18.1km · 409m climb · Loop · 1.8km away
More rewarding than it looks from the map. Skipton Moor has a real open-sky feel, and Farnhill Pinnacle is a genuinely odd and photogenic landmark.

Skipton Moor, Cawder Lane and the CanalMODERATE
Skipton Moor, Cawder Lane and the Canal
9.8km · 267m climb · Point to point · 1.8km away
Two different surfaces in one short route - open moor underfoot for the climb, then a flat, easy canal towpath to bring you home.
