The most efficient way to bag the highest of the Three Peaks, a compact loop with a superb ridge and the Ribblehead Viaduct bookending the run.

A 13.1km loop from Ribblehead over Whernside, the highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks at 736m, with the famous viaduct as your start and finish.

The route

This 13.1km loop is the classic short outing on Whernside, the highest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks and the county top of North Yorkshire at 736m. From Ribblehead the route follows the line of the Settle to Carlisle railway past the great viaduct and the aqueduct beyond, before climbing onto Whernside's long northern ridge. The viaduct view from the lower slopes is one of the finest railway scenes in England.

The summit

The ridge running along Whernside's crest is the heart of the route, a high, narrow promenade with steep drops and panoramic views over Ribblesdale, Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and out to Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland fells. A wall guides you along the top to the summit, after which the route drops steeply on the far side and loops back across boggy lower ground toward Ribblehead.

Why it works

At 13.1km this is an achievable mountain loop for runners building toward the bigger Three Peaks days, giving a real summit and a memorable ridge without a huge commitment. The Ribblehead setting, with its viaduct, railway and cafe, makes the logistics easy and the atmosphere special. The descent and lower return can be very wet underfoot, and the ridge is exposed to wind, so dress for the tops and watch your footing on the steep ground off the summit.

Getting there

Ribblehead is a rare hill start with its own railway station, on the Settle to Carlisle line, plus roadside parking and the Station Inn for food. The viaduct and aqueduct make the lower section a joy, and the route follows clear Three Peaks paths for most of the way, so navigation is straightforward in good weather. It is the perfect first big Dales summit, or a quick highest-of-the-three tick when time is short on a Dales weekend.

Watch out for

The summit ridge is narrow and fully exposed to wind, and the steep descent off the far side is awkward when wet. Lower sections are persistently boggy, and weather on the top changes fast.
