What you’re in for
Three distances over the Carneddau and, on the long one, the Glyderau, from Plas y Brenin at Capel Curig in late July: a 40K with 2,363m of climb and Grade 1 scrambling on the way, a 25K with 1,123m that takes in Pen yr Ole Wen, and a 15K. Yr Helgi Du is the black hound of the Carneddau, and the race is named for the ground rather than the distance — some of the highest mountains in Wales, in the organiser's words, as part of an imposing skyline. Signed, with mountain leaders on the course, energy stations and support vehicles in the valleys.
Terrain and trail
Rock: the stone-pitched and bouldery paths of the Glyderau, the steep grassy and scree climb of Pen yr Ole Wen, the broad stony plateau of the Carneddau with its exposure to whatever comes in from the sea, and rough fell and bog between. Hands on rock on the 40K. Marked, but carry the mountain kit list. A fell shoe with grip.
