What you’re in for

Sixty pilgrim miles of the North Wales Pilgrims Way from Bangor Cathedral to Aberdaron — 96.5km — inside twenty-four hours from a ten o'clock Saturday start in mid-June, with a GPS tracker, seven checkpoints with food, a passport to stamp along the way, and the trail's own waymarkers to follow, backed by the organiser's markers where the waymarking is thin. Two hundred and fifty places, and a coach from Aberdaron back to Bangor if you book it. A night section for most of the field, on a route that pilgrims have walked to Bardsey for a thousand years.

Terrain and trail

Lane and cycle path out of Bangor, then the Llŷn's mix: field path, green lane, village street, the coast path over the headlands and the pull over the shoulder of Yr Eifl in the middle. Mostly firm in June, with the coast path the roughest and the night lanes the easiest. Waymarked, but carry the GPX. A trail shoe, or a road shoe with tread.

Crib Goch is one of the most exposed ridges in Britain, and this route puts it in the middle of a big mountain day rather than as the whole objective, so you get the scramble and a proper crossing into the Glyderau either side of it.

It's the most runnable line to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, following the rack railway most of the way up, so you can move fast on genuinely good underfoot conditions rather than picking through rock.

Most people treat the Miners' and Pyg Tracks as a straightforward there-and-back pairing, but this GPX shows the loop actually crossing Crib Goch, which changes the entire character of the day.
