What you’re in for
From a 10K to a 56km ultra out of Llanberis on a July weekend, the 10K on the Saturday and the rest on the Sunday: the ultra has 2,300m of climb, the half 1,225m in 21.2km, the 10K 374m, and the marathon runs 43.8km. Rhyd Ddu, Beddgelert, Nant Gwynant and Pen y Pass are the waypoints, with the slopes of Yr Wyddfa on the longer distances. Marathon and ultra are ITRA and UTMB indexed; the course is signed, marshalled, with energy stations and support vehicles and chip timing. One of the biggest trail weekends in Wales, and the field is mixed accordingly.
Terrain and trail
Forest track and slate-quarry path around Llanberis, bridleway and lane down to Rhyd Ddu and Beddgelert, riverside and woodland in Nant Gwynant, then the stone-pitched mountain paths on the flanks of Yr Wyddfa — rocky, steep, and exposed near the top. Wet ground is normal in July. Marked. A trail shoe with grip.
