Cut-offs

A night run: ten miles, a tough climb out and the descent back. Part of the Shadowlands Winter Trail Series as well as running in its own right. Cold Brew mention a GPX updated in February 2026 but do not publish it openly.

Train for it: routes near the start

Routes starting within 20 km of Newcastle House, Rothbury, Northumberland, nearest first. Each one has a free GPX file and a TRP grade, so you can rehearse the ground before race day.

Simonside and Dove Crag from Rothbury

Sandstone crags with a proper sense of drama, Iron Age rock art on the approach, and views stretching from the Cheviots to the Northumberland coast for under 400m of climbing.

MODERATE

Simonside and Dove Crag Circular

8.4km · 274m climb · Loop · 3.0km away

You get proper crag-top views over the Cheviots and the coast for a genuinely modest amount of climbing, which makes this one of the best value short routes in the county.
