What you’re in for
Ten miles out of Rothbury after dark on the first Saturday in February, off at six from the Haugh car park: a single loop that climbs to the top of Simonside crag and comes back down to the town, named for the Duergar, the dwarves of Northumbrian legend who lead travellers astray on Simonside at night. Fully marked with signs and reflective markers, a GPX provided, a charged head torch compulsory along with waterproofs, phone, blanket and whistle. No cut-off — the organiser says they will wait as long as you are not stopping for a picnic.
Terrain and trail
Gravel forest track and trail up through the plantations, rocky sandstone path on Simonside's crag and the exposed top, then a fast descent back to Rothbury, all by torchlight. Trail shoes are mandatory, and the organiser means it. A trail shoe with grip.
