What you’re in for

From Holy Island down the Northumberland coast on St Oswald's Way, as far as you fancy: the 50km finishes at Craster, the 100km at Rothbury, the 100 mile at Heavenfield near Hexham. The start is timed to the causeway tide, which sets the day. Late September, with the longer distances running through the night.

Terrain and trail

Beach and dune to Bamburgh, coast path past Dunstanburgh to Craster, then inland over the Coquet valley and the Simonside edge to Rothbury and on across the Northumberland hills to the Wall. Sand, coast path, moorland track and lane. Firm coast, rougher inland; the 100 mile has real hill in the second half. A trail shoe, and lights.
