What you’re in for
A 10km or a half marathon starting and finishing by the River Aln beside Alnwick Castle, and running out into Hulne Park — the Duke of Northumberland's walled deer park, which is not normally open to runners — and past the Priory before coming back through the castle grounds. In February, so the estate is bare and the views are long. The 10km is 10.0km with 135m of climb; the half is 21.5km with 313m, which makes it one of the hillier halves on the Wild Deer calendar. Raises money for NE Youth.
Terrain and trail
Estate tracks, riverside path and parkland grass, with woodland sections in Hulne Park. The climbing is in the park — long rises on good surfaces rather than anything sharp — and February means the grass is soft and the riverside can be wet. Signed and marshalled; a trail shoe is the right call for the half.
