What you’re in for
A 10km or a half marathon through Slaley Forest and the grounds of Slaley Hall in the North Pennines, in mid-November. Eighth year, and a Northumberland fixture: forest track out through the plantation, then the hall's parkland for the finish. The 10km is 10.2km with 145m of climb, the half 21.1km with 301m. Pitched at first-timers over either distance and at people training for something longer, and the ground suits both.
Terrain and trail
Forest road, woodland path and estate parkland, with the forest sections soft and the drives firm. The climbing is the long, gentle kind through the plantation. November in the North Pennines means mud and possibly the first frost. A trail shoe.
