What you’re in for

The best 37 miles of the Pennine Way, Bowlees to Alston over Cross Fell, on the second Saturday in May: Low Force and High Force, Cauldron Snout and Cow Green, High Cup Nick, Dufton, Great Dun Fell and Cross Fell — the highest ground in England outside the Lakes — then Greg's Hut and the riverside paths down to Alston. A bus from Alston YHA to the start is included, with an eight o'clock start for anyone expecting eleven hours or more and nine for everyone else. Checkpoints at Dufton and Greg's Hut. Self-navigated on the Pennine Way's own markers, and mainly easy to follow despite how remote it is. A hundred places.

Terrain and trail

Riverside path and flagstone up Teesdale, the boulder scramble beside Cauldron Snout, the rim of High Cup Nick, then the long climb from Dufton onto the North Pennine plateau — peat, bog, flagstone and the road up Great Dun Fell — and the exposed, stony summit ridge to Cross Fell before the rough drop to Garrigill and the South Tyne. Snow is possible on the tops in May. A trail shoe with grip.
