What you’re in for
Thirteen miles out and back from Pooley Village Hall along the east shore of Ullswater — the Cockpit, Martindale church, the open slopes of Hallin Fell — and back the same way, on the first Saturday in March, with the daffodils out if the spring is early. Walkers away between nine and ten, steadier runners from ten, faster runners from eleven; two drinks stations passed twice each, and anyone can turn round at either and come back early for the refreshments. Signposted with marshals at the key points. Families welcome, and fourteen-to-eighteens with an adult.
Terrain and trail
Good bridleway and shore path, some wet patches, a stretch of tarmac lane, and the grassy pull up Hallin Fell if you go all the way. Easy going by Lakeland standards. A trail shoe.

Simply signposted with marshals at key points, and in their words very easy to navigate with no special skills needed. Three start windows: walkers 09:00 to 10:00, slower runners 10:00 to 11:00, faster runners 11:00 to 11:30. Two drinks stations, passed twice each. Started in 2016 to support the businesses after the Pooley Bridge floods.
