Lake District races

Races in the Lakes, where almost nothing is flat and the descents cost as much as the climbs. Graded on the course file, with the ground underfoot named.

The Lakes ask more of a runner per kilometre than anywhere else in England. Very little of it is flat, the climbs are steep rather than long, and the descents cost as much as the ascents — most people lose more time coming down Scafell or Helvellyn than going up. Underfoot runs from good bridleway to loose scree and wet rock within the same mile.

Races here span almost everything: five-kilometre trail runs from Keswick and Ambleside up to circuits of Windermere and hundred-mile crossings. Ascent runs from a couple of hundred metres to seven thousand, and the grade on this site is worked out from the course file rather than the distance, which is why a 23 km Lakes race can outrank a flat fifty.

Weather is the thing that catches people out. The high ground makes its own, cloud drops fast onto the ridges, and a still afternoon in Borrowdale tells you nothing about Styhead. Bring the kit the organiser asks for. Around a third of the races here expect you to navigate rather than follow tape, and on a bad day in cloud that is a real skill, not a formality.
