What you’re in for

Three races on the Saturday of the Kendal Mountain Festival in November, run by Maverick from Abbot Hall in the town: the 10km that is really 11.8, a new 25km, and the 50km ultra. All start on closed roads in the town centre and go out over the fells around Kendal — limestone escarpments, a deer park, castles and river trails — before a descent through the streets to a finish at the Festival basecamp with a crowd. The 10km is 11.8km with 267m of climb, the 25km 25.0km and 438m, the 50km 50.0km and 1,069m. Registration from eight; the 50km starts at nine, the 25km at ten, the 10km at eleven. No discounted entries on these.

Terrain and trail

Tarmac, cobbled streets, fell, field and hard-packed trail, in the organiser's description — a real mix, with limestone scar and grassy fell between the town sections. The 50km is undulating rather than mountainous and pitched at first-time ultra runners. November in Cumbria: wet, and the limestone is slick. A trail shoe with grip. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.

HARD
Staveley Round
17.4km · 462m climb · Loop · 7.1km away
You get a varied round of the quiet fells and valleys right on Staveley's doorstep, with Wilf's Cafe and the Mill Yard waiting the moment you finish.
Sallows and Sour Howes from StaveleyHARD
Sallows and Sour Howes from Staveley
19.3km · 480m climb · Loop · 7.2km away
These two fells sit between Kentmere and Troutbeck without belonging to either valley's usual round, so you get proper Lakeland ridge running with almost nobody else on it.

Ultra Tour of StaveleyEXPERT
Ultra Tour of Staveley
61.6km · 2,866m climb · Loop · 7.2km away
This is a commitment. Five distinct fell ridges, two remote valleys, and enough climbing to earn a very large meal. Plan your food, check the forecast, and don't set off late.

VERY HARD
Garburn Pass from Staveley
31.8km · 813m climb · Loop · 7.3km away
The Garburn Pass is one of the great old cross-fell tracks, and this loop links it with the quiet Kentmere and Troutbeck valleys for a big day that stays almost entirely runnable.

Reston Scar and Brunt KnottHARD
Reston Scar and Brunt Knott
12.6km · 617m climb · Loop · 7.3km away
Underrated terrain in a part of the Lakes most runners skip over. Reston Scar gives you proper fell on a short day, without the crowds of the central fells.

HARD
Longsleddale from Staveley
18.8km · 461m climb · Loop · 7.3km away
Longsleddale has no honeypot, no big car park and almost no visitors, just a single road to Sadgill and a valley that feels a century behind the rest of the Lakes.
