The course

What you’re in for

Twenty-three and a half miles from Kendal over Cunswick Fell, Whitbarrow Scar and Scout Scar on the last Sunday in January, nine hours, three checkpoints and a cut-off at the third. Navigation from the route description. An LDWA challenge event, which means walkers and runners together, a route description to navigate by rather than tape, checkpoints with food and drink, and a meal at the end. Entry is through the LDWA's own system, places are limited, and the ones in this list tend to fill early.

Terrain and trail

Limestone: the scars are firm, rocky and fast even in winter, with grassy field and lane between them, and the Lyth valley bottoms muddy in January. A trail shoe.

Train for it: routes near the start

Routes starting within 20 km of Abbot Hall Social Centre, Kendal, nearest first. Each one has a free GPX file and a TRP grade, so you can rehearse the ground before race day.

Garburn Pass from Staveley

The Garburn Pass is one of the great old cross-fell tracks, and this loop links it with the quiet Kentmere and Troutbeck valleys for a big day that stays almost entirely runnable.
