What you’re in for
Twenty-four miles from Coniston through to Ambleside and back with 1,341m of climb, or fifty miles with a second loop out to Dunnerdale and Broughton and 2,957m — twenty-four hours on the long one, from a seven o'clock start in mid-April. Navigation required. An LDWA challenge event, which means walkers and runners together, a route description to navigate by rather than tape, checkpoints with food and drink, and a meal at the end. Entry is through the LDWA's own system, places are limited, and the ones in this list tend to fill early.
Terrain and trail
Lakeland fell: stony bridleway and lakeshore round Coniston Water, the rough climb over to Ambleside and back, and on the fifty the wilder ground of Dunnerdale — bog, tussock and open fell, with a night section. April can be snow on the tops. A fell shoe with grip.
