What you’re in for
From the beach at Seascale to the top of Scafell Pike and back to the coast: 53km with about 1,700m of climb (the organiser says 5,600 feet), starting at seven on the seafront in early September, inland on quiet lanes, along the shore of Wast Water and up England's highest mountain, then down by a different line to finish at Seascale sports hall. Pit stops at 6.5, 14 and 26 miles, with the one at 14 the last before the climb; cut-offs set at a walker's three miles an hour. Fully waymarked with orange arrows, mountain safety staff on the hill, and a mandatory kit list. One of Rat Race's three national Sea to Summits, with Ben Nevis and Yr Wyddfa the other two.
Terrain and trail
Lane and cycle path from the coast, lakeshore path along Wast Water, then the mountain: stone-pitched path and boulder field to the summit, rough rocky descent on the far side, and lane again to the finish. The top can be in cloud and wind while Seascale is warm. Marked. A trail shoe with grip, and the kit list is not optional.
