What you’re in for

A hundred miles from Edinburgh Castle to Glamis Castle with 48 hours to do it — the first leg of Rat Race's castle-to-castle trilogy. Eight o'clock on a Saturday in late July from Princes Street Gardens, urban for the first stretch out of the city, then road and trail across Fife and into Angus, with the organiser's own note that the course is mostly flat apart from a big one at the end. Nine pit stops, with sleep stations at the sixth, seventh and eighth and a 25-litre bag to meet you there; cut-offs only bite after pit stop six at 57 miles, and they are set for a walker at four kilometres an hour. Fully waymarked with orange arrows, mandatory kit with spot checks. Built for people who have never done a hundred.

Terrain and trail

Pavement and cycle path out of Edinburgh, then a mix of quiet road, farm track, old railway and field path, with more road than trail — it is the flattest of the three and the easiest on the feet. A second night out for almost everyone. Marked. A road shoe with tread, or a cushioned trail shoe.
