What you’re in for
Fifty-five kilometres through Edinburgh, starting with a closed-road charge down the Royal Mile at seven in the morning: Calton Hill and its monuments, Salisbury Crags under Arthur's Seat, then the Water of Leith all the way out to Leith and back to a finish at the Commonwealth Pool. Mid-October, fourteen hours, three pit stops. Fully waymarked with orange arrows and staffed at the tricky junctions. Road and light trail, so the organiser suggests road or light trail shoes — but the kit list is a full one, taped-seam waterproofs and a bivvy bag included.
Terrain and trail
Cobbles and pavement in the old town, the tarmac and grass of Holyrood Park, then the Water of Leith walkway — mixed surface, riverside, leafy and slippery in October — and cycle path back through the city. Flat apart from Calton Hill and the Crags. Marked. A road shoe with tread.
