No reviews of the Wall, and nothing on what people wore. Both are things no organiser publishes and every runner wants before they enter — how it actually went, and what was on your feet.

What you’re in for

Carlisle Castle to the Newcastle quayside along Hadrian's Wall country, 112km in one go with 26 hours from a seven o'clock Saturday start in mid-June, and the last seven bridges counted down to the Millennium Bridge at the end. Pit stops at Lanercost, Walltown Quarry, The Sill, Hexham and Newburn, with cut-offs at each and then, in the organiser's words, as long as it takes from Newburn to the finish. Designed to be completed at three miles an hour, so walking it is a legitimate plan. Fully waymarked with orange arrows — no GPS file needed — and one of the most popular first ultras in the country for that reason.

Terrain and trail

Lane and cycle path out of Carlisle, then the Wall's own path along the crags between Walltown and the Sill — the one hilly, rocky stretch — before it drops to the Tyne valley for riverside path, disused railway and, from Newburn, the Hadrian's cycleway into Newcastle, flat and paved. Mostly firm; muddy on the crags after rain. Marked. A road shoe with tread, or a cushioned trail shoe.
