No reviews of the MTC Scotia, and nothing on what people wore. Both are things no organiser publishes and every runner wants before they enter — how it actually went, and what was on your feet.

What you’re in for

The end to end of Scotland on foot: nine days from Gretna Green to John o' Groats, 370 miles, stopping at Innerleithen, Edinburgh, Perth, Pitlochry, Kingussie, Inverness, Dornoch and Dunbeath. Each day is also sold as a standalone ultra — the Redcap, Glaistig, Nuckelavee, Grimalkin, Bertram de Shotts, Beithir, Morag, Selkie and Kelpie — so the field mixes people doing the lot with people doing a day. 595.7km with 5,164m of climb over the nine days, from a 31-mile recovery day to the 55-mile opener. Preset cut-offs each day at a minimum 4 mph average: fall below it and you are warned, do it two days running and you are withdrawn. Nothing on the course after ten at night. Hotel to hotel, with checkpoints roughly every eight miles, trackers with SOS, and maps and GPX for entrants only.

Terrain and trail

Road, cycle path and the odd track, hard-surfaced almost throughout — the organiser supplies road shoes. The hard days are the Borders hills on day one, Drumochter on day five and the Ord of Caithness on day eight; the rest is long rather than rough. Nine days of forty miles is the difficulty, not any one of them.
