What you’re in for

Wainwright's Coast to Coast raced non-stop: St Bees beach to the shore at Robin Hood's Bay, 300km with about 6,500m of climb, half of it in the Lakes, from a midday Saturday start in early April with the course closing at six on the Wednesday — 102 hours. Support points with food and somewhere to sleep at Patterdale, Kirkby Stephen, Richmond and Lordstones, cut-offs at each from Rosthwaite at half past two on the Sunday morning to Glaisdale at six on the Wednesday. Waterproof maps, digital files and a GPX provided; unmarked, self-navigated, and three nights out for most. Three national parks in one line.

Terrain and trail

The Lakes first: rocky passes, fell path and the climbs over to Patterdale and Shap, then limestone and moor to Kirkby Stephen, the Nine Standards bog, Swaledale's meadows and mine tracks, the flat Vale of Mowbray, and the Cleveland Hills and North York Moors — heather, flagstone and the long descent to the sea. April can be snow in the Lakes and sun on the moors. A trail shoe with grip.
