What you’re in for

Coast to coast along the Southern Upland Way, Portpatrick harbour to Cockburnspath village hall: 215 miles — 353km on the GPX with 8,038m of climb, or 346km and 7,218m on the organiser's figures — with a hundred hours to do it from a six o'clock Saturday start in early August. Twelve checkpoints with cut-offs from Castle Kennedy at 13 miles to the Watch at 198, sleep only at village halls, checkpoints and support vehicles, and self-navigation with the Harvey Southern Upland Way map as compulsory kit. Four nights out for most of the field.

Terrain and trail

Forest road and moorland path in Galloway, the high bare hills round the Lowther and Moffat ranges, the river valleys and forests of the Borders, and the Lammermuir crossing to the sea — peat, grass, forestry track and long stretches of tarmac lane, remote for hours at a time. A trail shoe with grip, and a second pair.
