What you’re in for

Sixty-three miles of coast in September, Guisborough to Filey — the second half of the Hardmoors 110 — along the Cleveland Way through Saltburn, Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough, on the cliff tops almost the whole way. It is 100.4km with 2,500m of climb, and eighteen hours to do it from an eight o'clock start at Guisborough rugby club. Two drop bags allowed. There is a tide rule at Runswick Bay: if the tide is in you wait with the marshal, and the wait is taken off your time; and a fixed high-tide diversion at Scarborough that everyone follows. Tracker included.

Terrain and trail

Cliff-top path for the main duration, in the organiser's words: steps down into every fishing village and steps back out, field edge and coast path between, a beach crossing at Runswick Bay and town streets through Whitby and Scarborough. The climb is all in short steep pieces and adds up to 2,500m. A trail shoe with grip; September is the kind month for it. Self-navigated on the Cleveland Way's own waymarks plus the organiser's route description; carry the map. Cup-free checkpoints with water, Coke and basic food, drop bags at the points named. A tracker is included, and the organiser watches them — they will ring you if you wander. Full mandatory kit is checked at registration and anyone found without it on the course is out.
