What you’re in for
The May round of the Hardmoors 26.2 series, from Sutton Bank on the western escarpment of the moors — above the Kilburn White Horse, with the Vale of York laid out below — along the edge and into the forest and dales behind it. The Trail 10K is 11.3km with 488m of climb, which tells you the 10K goes down the escarpment and back up it; the Trail Half is 26.1km with 579m, the Trail Marathon 45.7km with 1,036m. Start at eight.
Terrain and trail
Escarpment-edge path along Sutton Bank and the White Horse — firm and fast on the top, steep on the steps down — then forest track and moor behind. The most runnable round of the series once you are up, and May is usually dry. A trail shoe with grip. Hardmoors 26.2 races are not taped or signed. You navigate yourself from the route description and map they publish — printed, in a freezer bag, because the kit check at registration looks for them — and a GPX on a watch is a back-up, not a substitute. Cup-free at the checkpoints and the finish. Full mandatory kit carried for the whole race, and the organiser's line on the moors is worth repeating: do not underestimate them.
