What you’re in for
The Ring of Steele: 160 miles from a Friday-evening start, linking the Tabular Hills route with the whole Cleveland Way. From Scalby on the edge of Scarborough the route heads west along the Tabular Hills — Cockmoor Hall, the Hole of Horcum, Stape, Fadmoor — to Helmsley at 48 miles, then follows the full Hardmoors 110 line over the moors and down the coast to Filey. Fifty hours. 257.5km with 6,700m of climb. Registration from five on the Friday, start at six. Fifteen checkpoints, including the White Horse, Square Corner, Kildale, Saltburn, Runswick Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough; several with no support crews. Tracker included. You need a finish of at least 60 trail miles in a single-stage event to enter, and they check.
Terrain and trail
Tabular Hills track and forest road through the first night, then everything the 110 throws at you: flagged moor over the Cleveland Hills, heather, peat, and a hundred miles of cliff path with steps at every village. Two nights out for most of the field. Full kit for the whole distance, spare everything in the drop bags. A trail shoe with grip. Self-navigated on the Cleveland Way's own waymarks plus the organiser's route description; carry the map. Cup-free checkpoints with water, Coke and basic food, drop bags at the points named. A tracker is included, and the organiser watches them — they will ring you if you wander. Full mandatory kit is checked at registration and anyone found without it on the course is out.
