The course

What you’re in for

Thirty-ish miles from Robin Hood's Bay in January: south along the Cleveland Way cliff path through Ravenscar and Hayburn Wyke to Crook Ness and Scalby Mills on the edge of Scarborough, then back on the Cinder Track — the old Scarborough to Whitby railway — with checkpoints at Ravenscar, Crook Ness and Scalby Mills each way. It is 50.2km with 1,040m of climb, and eleven hours to do it; the Ravenscar checkpoint at 26 miles closes at nine and a half hours. Start at eight from Fylingdales village hall. The route has changed over the years, so the organiser says not to read too much into old results.

Terrain and trail

Cliff path going out — steps, mud and exposure to the sea wind, with the drops into the wykes steep — and the flat, firm Cinder Track coming back, which is where the time is made. January conditions: wet and windy at best, ice on the cliff steps at worst. A trail shoe with grip. Food and refreshments at every checkpoint, cup-free. Hardmoors races are not taped or signed. You navigate yourself from the route description and map they publish — printed, in a freezer bag, because the kit check at registration looks for them — and a GPX on a watch is a back-up, not a substitute. Cup-free at the checkpoints and the finish. Full mandatory kit carried for the whole race, and the organiser's line on the moors is worth repeating: do not underestimate them.
