What you’re in for
The winter short ultra that calls itself fifteen and measures eighteen: a circular from Fylingdales village hall at Robin Hood's Bay in January, out along the cliffs to Ravenscar and back round by the moor, with the Ravenscar checkpoint passed twice. It is 28.7km with 518m of climb, and eight hours to do it, with cut-offs at the checkpoints. Start at nine, on the same weekend as the Hardmoors 30. No tracker on this one.
Terrain and trail
Cliff-top path on the Cleveland Way, the old railway of the Cinder Track and moorland path above the bay. January: mud, wind and possibly ice on the cliff steps. Nothing technical but nothing kind either. A trail shoe with grip and the full kit, hat and gloves included. Hardmoors races are not taped or signed. You navigate yourself from the route description and map they publish — printed, in a freezer bag, because the kit check at registration looks for them — and a GPX on a watch is a back-up, not a substitute. Cup-free at the checkpoints and the finish. Full mandatory kit carried for the whole race, and the organiser's line on the moors is worth repeating: do not underestimate them.
