What you’re in for
The Cleveland Way end to end in one go: 110 miles around the North York Moors and down the coast, with 36 hours to do it. The 2027 running is the twentieth, and for that year only it returns to the original direction — Helmsley to Filey — over the Cleveland Hills to the coast at Saltburn, then Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar and Scarborough to the finish at Filey. 177km with 5,000m of climb. Start at eight in Helmsley, tracker collection from half six. Checkpoints roughly every ten miles — the White Horse at 8, Kildale at 42 with a drop bag, Saltburn at 57, Ravenscar at 88 with a drop bag, Scarborough at 102 — several with no support crews allowed. One support runner at a time from Gribdale onwards, carrying none of your kit. Relay teams run it too.
Terrain and trail
The whole Cleveland Way: flagged and stone-pitched moor over the Cleveland Hills, heather and peat between, then a full night and day of cliff path with steps into and out of every village on the coast. The moor is the exposed part; the coast is the relentless part. Full leg cover and the whole mandatory list, carried for the duration. A trail shoe with grip, and a second pair for the drop bag at Ravenscar. Self-navigated on the Cleveland Way's own waymarks plus the organiser's route description; carry the map. Cup-free checkpoints with water, Coke and basic food, drop bags at the points named. A tracker is included, and the organiser watches them — they will ring you if you wander. Full mandatory kit is checked at registration and anyone found without it on the course is out.
