What you’re in for
Scarborough to Whitby on the Cleveland Way through Robin Hood's Bay, then inland along the Esk Valley, over the moor and through the forest to pick up the Tabular Hills Walk back to Scarborough: 100km with about 2,270m of climb on the organiser's figures. The 50km first half finishes at Whitby Showground with 1,260m of the climb; the 27km first quarter is all coast; there is a 25km loop and a ten-mile at Whitby. Late June, through Saturday night for the continuous distance. An Ultra Challenge event, which means walkers, joggers and runners on the same course, signed with pink arrows and glow sticks after dark, with a covered rest stop every twelve kilometres or so — food, drink, medics, toilets — and a bigger one every twenty-five. Runners can enter with a target time; most of the field will be walking.
Terrain and trail
Cliff-top coast path with steep drops into Robin Hood's Bay and the other villages, then rougher going inland — moorland track, heather and forest road on the North York Moors, and the escarpment of the Tabular Hills. Firm on the coast in June, boggy patches on the moor. Signed. A trail shoe with grip.
