What you’re in for

A 5km, a 10km or a half marathon through Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon — the National Trust's World Heritage Site — taking in the deer park, the water garden and the abbey ruins themselves. Late February, when the estate is quiet and you get it more or less to yourselves. The 5km is 5.0km with 45m of climb, the 10km 9.9km and 143m, the half 21.1km. The abbey and the water garden are the flat bits; the climbing is in the deer park above.

Terrain and trail

Estate paths, gravel drives and parkland grass, with woodland on the deer park loops. Firm and easy for the most part, with February mud on the grass sections. A road shoe with tread is enough for the 5km and 10km; a light trail shoe for the half.
