What you’re in for
The forty-eighth Tanners: thirty or twenty miles of the Surrey Hills from Leatherhead on a route that is new every January, with minimal support and everyone back by seven. A navigation event first and a distance event second. An LDWA challenge event, which means walkers and runners together, a route description to navigate by rather than tape, checkpoints with food and drink, and a meal at the end. Entry is through the LDWA's own system, places are limited, and the ones in this list tend to fill early.
Terrain and trail
The Surrey Hills in January: chalk and greensand, steep wooded slopes, and mud of every kind. Thirty miles of it in the shortest daylight of the year, mostly self-supported. A trail shoe with grip and a head torch for the finish.
