LDWA West Yorkshire Roundhay 50

The course

What you’re in for

Fifty miles in two loops round rural north Leeds from Roundhay in late February, by Temple Newsam, the Meanwood Valley and the Harewood estate, with twenty-two hours and two start times to choose from. An LDWA challenge event, which means walkers and runners together, a route description to navigate by rather than tape, checkpoints with food and drink, and a meal at the end. Entry is through the LDWA's own system, places are limited, and the ones in this list tend to fill early.

Terrain and trail

Parkland, woodland path, estate track, field edge and lane — rolling, and February-muddy in the fields and the Meanwood woods, with a night section for most of the field. A trail shoe.

Routes starting within 20 km of St Andrews Roundhay United Reformed Church, Shaftesbury Avenue, Leeds, nearest first. Each one has a free GPX file and a TRP grade, so you can rehearse the ground before race day.

Washburn Valley from Leathley

You get a quiet string of reservoirs and river woodland a stone's throw from Otley, with none of the crowds of the honeypot dales. It is the sort of route locals keep to themselves.

Fewston, Swinsty and Stainburn from Harrogate

You link two of Yorkshire's prettiest reservoirs and a quiet forest into one long circuit, with reservoir-side trails that keep the running fast and flowing for most of the distance.

You get woodland singletrack and formal gardens inside a spa town, so it feels like a proper trail run without any drive to a trailhead.

VERY HARD

The Ilkley Skyline

Eleven kilometres of unbroken moor crest, then you cross the valley and run the skyline back the other way with your entire morning laid out in front of you. It is the biggest day available from an Ilkley train station.

Shipley Glen and Baildon Moor

You start at the World Heritage village of Saltaire, run the canal and the wooded ravine of Shipley Glen, then climb to the trig on Baildon Moor for a proper moor-top view over Airedale.

HARD

Harrogate Ringway

32.3km · 434m climb · Loop · 18km away

It rings an entire spa town on green corridors most locals never knew were joined up, so you get a proper long run without leaving Harrogate's doorstep.
