If you've got an hour and you're in Skipton, this is the run. Park, woodland, canal towpath. Nothing complicated, nothing slow, good underfoot all year.

The route

Starting from Aireville Park - directly opposite Skipton train station via the Gawflat Swing Bridge over the Leeds-Liverpool Canal - the route circuits the park's open green space before picking up the woodland trails on the northern edge. The woodland section gives the run its character: a mix of broadleaf and conifer with firm paths that hold in most conditions.

The circuit returns through the lower park, passing the leisure centre and sports facilities, with a final stretch along the canal towpath back to the start. Total distance is 6.8km with barely 55m of ascent - this is as flat as running gets in the Skipton area.

What it's for

This isn't a destination route. It's a quality-of-life run - the kind you do when you're based in Skipton for the weekend and want movement before the bigger day, or when you need to get miles in without thinking about navigation. The paths are maintained, the park is lit in parts, and the canal towpath gives a pleasant return regardless of season.

Skipton parkrun uses Aireville Park (Saturday 9am) - the course gives you the measure of the park's layout. On non-parkrun days the park is quiet early in the morning, busier through midday with families and school groups.

Skipton as a base

The route's real value is that it starts from Skipton station. Five minutes off the train and you're in the park. For runners doing a train trip to explore the wider area, this is a useful warm-up before heading out toward the moor or the Dales. The town has good post-run facilities - the Devonshire Arms, various cafes on the High Street, and a market on Mondays and Saturdays.

For longer options from the same start point, the Skipton Moor circuits climb directly from town onto the moor to the northwest.

Watch out for

Shared use with cyclists on the canal towpath section. Busy park at weekends and during school holidays.

Leave No Trace

  • Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories.
  • Please respect the countryside and all its inhabitants.
  • Dogs on leads near livestock, and around ground-nesting birds from March to July.
  • Gates as you find them — open or closed, leave it that way for the farmer and the next runner.
  • Take it all home — wrappers, peel, tissue, the lot. It doesn't count as biodegradable if you can still see it.
  • Stick to the path where the ground either side is wet, planted, or nesting habitat.
