What you’re in for
Three marathons in three days along the Dorset coast path, west to east: Charmouth to Portland on the Friday (45.3km, including the whole way round the Isle of Portland), Portland to Lulworth Cove on the Saturday (42km), and Lulworth to Shell Bay at Studland on the Sunday (43.6km) — 130.9km in all, from an event HQ at the Masonic Hall on Portland. Late March. Two start groups each morning, walkers and joggers first and runners after, checkpoints roughly every 10km with hot drinks at some, and closing times issued on your emergency card. Self-navigated along the coast path's own signposts, with a GPS or map and compass in the kit.
Terrain and trail
Cliff path with the steepest climbs on the whole south coast — Golden Cap on day one, the Purbeck switchbacks on day three — the pebbles of Chesil, the limestone tracks and quarry paths of Portland, and beach and dune at the end. March mud on the clay stretches, chalk that skates when wet. A trail shoe with grip.
