What you’re in for
Forty miles from Abbotsbury to Lulworth Cove on the South West Coast Path, on the Saturday of Jurassic Coast Challenge weekend in late March: a bus from the Masonic Hall on Portland at a quarter to eight, off at half past, thirteen hours and a hard stop at half past nine in the evening, with the organiser retiring anyone who drops below five kilometres an hour. Checkpoints every 10 to 20km with food, water and cola. Self-navigated along the acorn signs; a GPS watch or a map and compass is compulsory kit.
Terrain and trail
Chesil's inland path and the Fleet at the start, then Weymouth's seafront, and the big climbs of the Purbeck coast from Osmington on — White Nothe, Bat's Head, Swyre Head and Durdle Door — wild and rugged in the organiser's words, with steep grassy descents that test your concentration as much as your legs. A trail shoe with grip.
