The Maverick Dark Hampshire Gravel

What you’re in for

Alice Holt Forest after dark on Halloween: one, two or three 5km laps of the ancient woodland on the Hampshire–Surrey border, on wide forest tracks and tree-lined avenues with owls overhead. Pitched as the ideal first night race, and buggies are welcome; dogs are not, because it is dark. The Short is 5.3km with 45m of climb, the Middle 10.5km and 84m, the Long 15.7km and 131m. Start at half past six. Pizza and fire pits at the finish. Four miles from Farnham and two from Bentley station, with direct trains from London.

Terrain and trail

Gravel forest road and wide track — the Gravel series name is accurate — flat and firm, with the odd puddle and root where the surface gives out. As easy as night running gets. A head torch and road shoes with tread. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.
