What you’re in for
Five routes from Cranleigh Showground in the Surrey Hills in June: Winterfold and Hurtwood forests, the top of Pitch Hill, and on the Ultra a crossing of Leith Hill — the highest point in south-east England — and a stretch of the North Downs Way. The Short is 5.1km with 57m of climb, the Middle 11.6km and 247m, the Half 22.5km and 493m, the Marathon 43.1km and 940m, the 50k Ultra 52.5km and 1,223m. Ultra cut-offs give eight and a half hours from an eight o'clock start: Peaslake village hall at 12km by 10:00, the base of Leith Hill at 19km by 11:05, Ranmore Common at 32.5km by 13:20, Leith Hill again at 43km by 15:00. The Marathon gets eight hours from 08:30.
Terrain and trail
Undulating forest trail with a few punchy hills, in the organiser's rating: sandy greensand track through the Hurtwood, rooty single-track, and steep, short climbs onto Pitch Hill and Leith Hill. Dry and fast in June. A trail shoe for the Half upwards. Maverick's format on every event: a fully marked course, outposts stocked with Precision Fuel & Hydration and a spread of sweet and savoury food as a top-up for what you carry, no cups (bring one), a bag drop, an event village with food and a non-alcoholic beer at the end. Mandatory kit is checked on the longer routes.
