What you’re in for

A single anticlockwise loop of the Chilterns from Chesham, 99.7km with 1,691m of climb on the GPX (the organiser says 1,800m and more): out through Hastoe to the Ashridge estate, Ivinghoe Beacon and Aldbury, Tring Park, Wendover, Coombe Hill, Whiteleaf, Bledlow Ridge, Hampden and Great Missenden, and back. Seven in the morning in early October with nineteen hours, so most of the field finishes in the dark. Six checkpoints at 14, 28, 41, 58, 75 and 88km. Marked with orange arrows and ribbon, but you carry the GPX and a printed map as well, plus a full kit list with head torch and leg cover.

Terrain and trail

Chiltern chalk and beech woods for a hundred kilometres: firm flinty bridleway on the ridges, rooty single-track through the woods, steep short climbs onto each scarp and greasy descents off them, and clay field path in the valleys that holds October mud. Marked. A trail shoe.
