What you’re in for
A tough long-marathon from Wooler Hostel into the Cheviot Hills in the Northumberland National Park, with about 1,850m of climbing. Checkpoints are at Cheviot base camp, the refuge hut on the Pennine Way, Hethpool and Yeavering Bell before the return to Wooler. The ground is almost all off-road and in mid-November can be boggy, frozen or snow-covered. The route is marked with tape and signs, but kit is full hill kit including map and compass, survival bag, head torch and waterproof trousers. The limit is 9.5 hours with checkpoint cut-offs, and checkpoint 2 has only emergency supplies. Parking is at Wooler Auction Mart; the half marathon runs the next day.
