What you’re in for

The end to end of Wales on foot: six days from Holyhead to Barry Island on National Cycle Route 8 — Lôn Las Cymru — with the overnights at Caernarfon, Barmouth, Llanidloes, Glasbury and Merthyr Tydfil. 256 miles, averaging just over 42 a day, and each day is also sold as a standalone ultra. 407.5km in six days, from the 35-mile last day down the Taff to the 47-mile crossing of the Cambrian mountains from Barmouth. Preset cut-offs each day at a minimum 4 mph average, a warning the first time you fall below it, withdrawal the second. Nothing on the course after ten at night. Checkpoints roughly every eight miles, trackers with SOS, maps and GPX for entrants only.

Terrain and trail

Route 8 is traffic-free cycle path, old railway and quiet lane, hard-surfaced almost the whole way — road shoes, as supplied. The Mawddach Trail and the Taff Trail are the flat and famous bits; between them the route crosses the mountains of mid-Wales and the Brecon Beacons, and those two days carry most of the climb.
